Well it is October and we are making our way (slowly) south. Got as far as the Keppels and the northerlies turned into southerlies with a vengeance! Should be able to escape on Sunday, then hopefully head on down to Pancake Creek after traversing the Narrows and not stopping off at Gladstone.

Been doing the usual "boat work" in the Manly Harbour. Hauled out, bottom painted, inside painted, some varnishing and some electrical mods. Now we are ready to move. Hopefully next week, we will start our northerly migration. First stop should be Garys Anchorage in the Sandy Straits. After that, well we will see. Eventually we should spend some time in the Whitsunday Islands with family and friends.

Well, we are here. Sydney was great, Port Stephens was great, Laurieton up the Camden Haven River was also a great place to be and after an overnight stop at Trail Bay then Coffs Harbour we arrived in Manly on Friday PM.

Came in over the notorious "bar" yesterday about 1700hrs, pretty tense! Now we are anchored up the river opposite the Combined Services Club where we have access to water, showers etc. Plenty of good coffee shops five minutes away!

Well, I have been a bit slack with this blog, we moved down the coast from Coffs to Sydney via Port Stephens. While in Sydney we did the tourist things like watch the fireworks, awesome, caught the Manley ferry to Manley and generally did some sight seeing. Should be leaving Sydney next week for wet Queensland!

Left Iluka for a run down to Coffs Harbour, uneventfull downwind sail, arrived Coffs 1630hrs so anchored in the outer harbour before entering the Marina the following day Saturday. Will be here a few days before venturing out again for a trip to Port Stephens.

Well, it was a while ago we left Gladstone, since then we have moved down the coast to Bundy, Sandy Straits, Mooloolaba, Lucinda Bay, Horseshoe Bay, Bums Bay, Iluka and now in Maclean before leaving for Coffs Harbour when the weather improves. To get here from Iluka, we go up the Clarence River and under a bridge which takes the traffic on the Pacific Highway. We had to book to get the bidge opened, 24 hours notice is required for this traffic disruption!

Out of Mackay - Into Gladstone via the Narrows

At last! The weather was kind to us and we did an overnighter from Mackay to Great Keppel Island. Anchored for the night (Tuesday) and onto the Narrows entrance to anchor for the night and keep the sand flies (no see ems) entertained. We are now safely moored in the Gladstone Marina and hope to be on our way south on Tuesday (weather permitting of course).

Below are some pics from our transit through the Narrows around the Cattle Crossing. This part of the waterway dries to over 2 metres at low tide, so it is not a place for a lunch stop!

Below shows how it is good to go with the tide! GPS showing 7.2 knots (actual speed), Log 3.8 (speed through the water).

Still here in the marina waiting for the rain and wind to abate. Wind is still SE, the direction we want to go. When it drops below 10 knots or swings to the North we will get moving again. Waiting, Waiting.

Bowen Harbour

Well, since Newry we have been around the Whitsundays for a while where we came across a lot of whales, so far the tally is about 40. Next, onto the Gloucester Passage and the Eco Resort, now in Bowen on the piles. Had another good look around Bowen and stocked up with everything. If the "Blowin at Bowen" slows a little we may be off tomorrow (Thursday) and head back to the Passage and then back into the Whitsundays for a while.

We had a fast sail from Curlew Island to Mackay yesterday, Friday, came across a few whales doing the things whales do, leaping out of the sea and displaying their tales like standing on their heads. All pretty spectacular.

Sailed here from Gladstone after a nice rest, well, lots of walking and a couple of free "Industry Tours" which were well worth it. Now after crossing the Tropic of Capricorn we spent the night here at Cape Capricorn, a real nice spot, but a real rolly anchorage, but just one night here.

Arrived in Pancake Creek Friday afternoon, the 2nd of July 2010. A great place to anchor for a few days. Caught up with Captain Col of the good ship Lady Marlen, he's been anchored here for a couple of months. After here next stop Gladstone. It's cold here, but the sun is shining and all is well.

Well, we are now in Maryborough after an interesting 20 miles up the Mary River. At the beginning the chart did not quite match the marks on the river, but we overcame this small glitch without running aground (just). We are on a mooring provided by the marina, the marina couldn't accommodate us so the mooring is fine. Been for a walk around the town, quite a decent size place with all the usual shops and facilities. Found a car exhaust place that made up a piece of stainless tube to fix our leaking exhaust, all good now at a car price, not a boat price, even better. We plan to spend a week here doing the tourist thing as we have never been in Maryborough before. The rain is patchy so not too bad, we get some sunshine in between which helps with the battery charging.

A Night at the Perth Motorplex

We spent a few days in Perth for Christmas and visited the Motorplex. The fastest time for the standing quarter mile was an incredible 4.7 seconds at over 500 KM / H.

Arrived back in Aus, (Bundaberg) Wednesday the 4th November about 10:30am. Overall a pretty uneventful passage with "disturbed" seas but nothing bad. The passage was our fastest from New Cal at 5 days and 5 hours. We are in the Port Bundaberg Marina till the Southerlies ease or change to Northerlies so we can get back "home" to Scarborough.

We finally left Koumac for the crossing to Bundaberg, Australia. It's 2045 hrs on Monday evening and we are 165 NM from the Breaksea Spit, the closest point before Hervey Bay, after that another 50 NM to the Bundaberg Port Marina in the Burnett River. We should arrive there for clearance formalities on Wednesday the 4th around Midday.

We have returned to Noumea today to pick up our newly filled scuba tanks, that done, the morning will see us getting some nice French pastries etc, then off to Koumac where we will clear out for Australia, via the Chesterfield Reef. If the weather permits, we will spend a day or two at the reef before heading to Bundaberg for clear in formalities and to give AQIS some money, they charge even us Ausies to come home!

We have been in Port Moselle Marina for four days, left yesterday to anchor outside. This morning off on the big sail to Baie Maa (10 miles) where we will spend a week or more before returning to Moselle to clear out for Australia.

Quinco - Under Attack at Bailly!

Last night, Tuesday, the dolphins attacked, the fish that is. About 3am we awoke to the sound of "things" striking the hull, then the sounds of very loud "breathing". An inspection from the deck revealed dolphins herding up fish for their early breakfast, or late dinner. The sight was amazing, as the fish tried to flee the marauding dolphins the water lit up with phosphorescence, it looked like tracer bullets heading for the good ship Quinco. Of course, in their haste they couldn't navigate around the hull, so lots of the fish hit Quinco side on. This rampaging by the dolphins went on for half an hour, keeping us awake. An inspection this morning showed little of the event last night other than a few patches of scales still clinging to the hull near the water line. Next thing we hear, via a sked on the HF is that we are under a Tsunami watch in New Caledonia. There was an earthquake measuring over 8 in Samoa and the "waves" would reach us at 0916 local time. All ships were advised not to approach the coast during this event. We were not concerned as we were sheltered by Grande Terre and as 0916 came and went, not a ripple was to be seen.

It's 9:30PM Wednesday. We are now just 350 Nautical Miles from Noumea motor sailing as the wind is light (5 knots). The seas are pretty calm and the moon is shining. On passage we have had some brilliant sun sets. Flying fish on the deck as well as some unwelcome birds hitching a ride and leaving many deposits behind for me to clean up. We should be in Noumea Saturday evening.

Well, here we are in the Bundy Port Marina, overall from Cairns down the coast we have had a dream run. Through the Narrows to Gladstone, one night in the marina then a quick sail down to Bundy, sailed all the way poled out, winds up to 20 knots from the stern. Now all we need is a decent weather pattern to take us across to Noumea, or Koumac if we can't make enough southing.

Well, here we are again (still) with two cyclones been and gone, Charlotte on the 12th of January and Ellie on the 1st of February, the weather bureau is forecasting the possibility of another forming around Cairns on Thursday the 5th of Feb 2009. Let's hope it also fizzles out nice and quickly and leaves us alone in the marina with the other boaties hoping for the same!

We have been here for a while now, I spend a lot of time down below in the air conditioning building web sites. Rose is working currently, part time via an agency. Enough earnings to pay the marina costs. Apart from the work etc, we have been to the movies in the big city (Cairns) a few times, we have also joined a local football club (Centrals, AFL) and had dinner there last night. Tuesday night is two for one night, so, after a decent meal and a couple of stubbies for the two of us, total cost of $20.50. Not bad and they picked us up and dropped us back at the marina when we were finished in their courtesy bus.

Well, we left Port Douglas this morning and are now on a mooring at the Low Islets, a whole 8 miles from Port Douglas.

Took a ride from Smithfield to Kuranda on the Skyrail. This is a cable car going up the mountain to Kuranda on the Atherton Tablelands. Very Scenic.

Had a great sail from the Scarborough Marina across the Wide Bay Bar and into Garry's Anchorage for the night ( Sunday). Monday night saw us anchored off Bookar Island then up in the morning for a radar assisted sail through the dense fog into Hervey Bay and onto Bundy. Arrived in the Burnett River, Bundaberg and anchored outside the Bundaberg Port Marina last night, Tuesday. In the Marina today for a couple of days rest etc.

The Projects Never End!

The crane was called to remove the mast to allow it to go for a sand blast and paint.

While the mast is away, we hauled out for a bottom paint and some sea cock maintenance.

All else was fine, no surprises!

Sandy Straits to Mooloolaba

After leaving Bundaberg, we ventured into the Great Sandy Straits for the night, anchored around Elbow Point Friday night then up again at 0430hrs Saturday for the journey South via the Wide Bay Bar. The bar was behaving well with no white water and a clearance of about 4 meters of water under the keel. The rest of the trip to Mooloolaba was uneventful and saw us arrive at Kawana Waters Marina at 1630hrs. Next leg will be to Scarborough Marina when the Southerlies abate.

We have rested and done some more provisioning for Quinco's short trip South. We will be heading into Hervey Bay and into the Great Sandy Straits, exiting the Straits through the Wide Bay Bar and then onto Mooloolaba. We will be catching up with friends there so will spend a day or two at Mooloolaba then head further South to our marina berth in the Scarborough Marina. That will be the end of our cruising for this season, a bit of work on the boat will follow and some paid work to pay for it all. Next season? Who knows? Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to all.

This is the response I received from the Australian Quarantine & Inspection Service re arriving after hours. You are charged overtime rates on the weekend or Friday evening.

From the District manager of Quarantine in Bundaberg:- re weekend charging. If any vessel enters the port limits on Saturday they must be quarantine/customs cleared. The same goes for Sunday the exception being if you enter port limits after 1700 on Sunday with Q/flag displayed you can anchor at the Q buoy till Monday morning and be Quarantine/Customs cleared when the marina opens at 0800.

Please be aware that if you enter the port limits between 1630 on Fridays and 1600 on Sundays you will be charged significant overtime charges.

Arrival Procedures:
When in range contact Volunteer Marine Rescue (callsign VMR488) on VHF channel 81 to announce your arrival. They will ask you some questions and notify us of your ETA. Their hours are between 0600 and 1800. If you arrive outside of these hours you may anchor at the Quarantine buoy, located at 24deg 45min 57.95sec South and 152deg 23min 29.27sec East.

Visited Tana's famous volcano, Mount Yasur, to see the fireworks on the 12th of August 2007. Spectactular! We abandoned our visit after a molten rock flew over our heads!
